Day Hikes to Canipole Cave Art

Join us on a day hike to see the cave paintings of "La Pinguica"(also known as "Canipole") just 1 1/2 hours North of Loreto. There you will see some fantastic examples of petroglyphs (rock carvings) and pictographs (cave paintings). Our experienced local guides have many years of leading tours in this area. They are a wealth of information about flora, fauna, history, etc. So for anyone who would like to see the rock art of Baja but does not have time to make a multi-day mule trip, our day hike to La Pinguica is for you!

Hiking Conditions

The hike is roughly 2.25 miles in each direction and flat. Part of the hike is on a narrow trail and the other part requires walking the gravel dry creek bed. This is not a good hike for folks with bad knees or tricky ankles.

Trip Itinerary

Start and end times are adjusted seasonally. If your tour is in the hotter months, we leave closer to 6:30 am early. If your tour is during the winter/ early spring months we leave at 8:30 am Staying down South? We can provide transport from Puerto Escondido or Villas del Palmar. Be sure to elect that option when making your booking.

7:30 AM
Meet at Sea and Land office location or local hotel as previously arranged.
7:45-9:15 Travel North
Travel North an hour on highway, half hour dirt road to trailhead.
9:15-10:45
Hike flat, dry river bed to site. Stopping along the way for wildlife viewing and plant ID
10:45 AM- 11:30 PM Visit Site
Stop at cave paintings for pictures (sin flash), interpretation, and exploration
11:30-1:30 Lunch and Return
Fresh tradtional Mexican lunch, burritos, veggies, fruit. Hike back to vehicle.
1:30-3:00 PM Drive back to Loreto

Be Sure To Bring

Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, extra snacks, camera, batteries, warm layers in Winter and Spring months, and a pack for personal items. Hike can be done in Chacos, tennis, or good hiking shoes depending on your preference.
